How to Protect Your Deck During the Winter
Winter weather can be hard on outdoor structures. Moisture, temperature changes, debris, and improper snow or ice removal can affect both wood and composite decks.
A few practical steps can help protect your investment.
Remove Leaves and Debris
Leaves, pine needles, dirt, and other debris can trap moisture against the deck surface. Clear the deck regularly, paying particular attention to corners, spaces around posts, and areas underneath furniture.
Keep Drainage Paths Open
Water should be able to drain away from the deck and house. Check gutters, downspouts, landscaping, and the ground beneath the structure.
Do not allow water to repeatedly collect around footings, posts, stairs, or the home’s foundation.
Inspect the Deck Before Severe Weather
Look for loose boards, protruding fasteners, unstable railing, cracked stair treads, and damaged trim. Small problems may worsen when exposed to freezing temperatures.
Use Care When Removing Snow

A tarp placed directly over a deck for a long period can trap moisture. Any protective covering should allow appropriate ventilation and drainage.
